喀喇沁蒙古源于古老的乌梁海蒙古。成吉思汗时代，乌梁海部功勋卓著名将者勒蔑（mie）被封为第九位千户诺颜（领主），其后裔因“守主上（成吉思汗）金柩”，得名“喀喇沁”，意为“守卫者”。
